In partnership with PrintHouston and The Jung Center, Temporal Musings is an exhibition featuring artworks by three visual artists: Lucinda Cobley, Shanti Conlan, and Cathie Kayser. From the sublime to the ordinary, each artist embraces nature as a conduit for exploring geological, botanical and celestial themes; it also connects them to their own sense of humanity and place in the natural world.

The intersection of nature and personal introspection is often explored in art, and while it is common ground, each artist’s interpretation is specific to their own approach ranging from abstract to representational. Within their artistic practices each artist encompasses printmaking techniques from monotype, relief and intaglio. Well versed in their craft they often combine printmaking with painting and drawing mixed media approaches, including ink, watercolor, casein, acrylic and collage, on a variety of surfaces and forms, such as paper, wood, fabric, and clay.

Cobley, Conlan, and Kayser are each long-term members of PrintHouston, a non-profit artists’ collective dedicated to promoting original fine art prints through community outreach and participation throughout Houston and beyond.

Lucinda Cobley
Lucinda Cobley is a visual artist and teacher who explores printmaking, drawing, and painting. She is a current member of PrintHouston and has exhibited both nationally and internationally.

She was born in Birmingham in the UK and moved to Houston nearly 30 years ago. She studied in Birmingham, Stoke-on-Trent and London where she earned a BA (Hons) in Glass Design and a Post Graduate Diploma in Illustration.

The art she produces is a contemplation of color, light and surface. She captures passing light effects or shadows, then preserves the memory as an expression of pure color. Her objective is to still down time, and conversely it becomes both minimal and painterly in the process.

Shanti Conlan
The daughter of Peace Corp volunteers, Shanti Conlan was born on Majuro in the Marshall Islands. She spent her childhood in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where she developed a love of nature and a need to explore her environment, from rocks and dirt, to forests, ponds, and the night sky. These elements would inform every part of her artistic journey, creating an ever evolving visual language used to interpret the world
and cosmos around us.

Conlan is a graduate of Houston’s High School for the Performing and Visual Arts and earned her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her work has been exhibited in numerous solo and group shows, and is held in private and institutional collections nationally and internationally.

Working in the mediums of printmaking, drawing, painting, and collage, Conlan creates images that capture both the physical and intangible forces of the natural world. Her work is a visual interpretation of these forces, from geological formations and oceanic currents, to the movement and interaction of celestial bodies. The work shifts in focus from the macro to the micro, examining the multiple worlds
within worlds.

Cathie Kayser
Kayser is inspired by the natural world she encounters in her gardens, on her walks, and during visits to parks and public spaces. She is primarily a printmaker but works in several mediums to produce original prints; artist books and portfolios; graphite, charcoal, and ink drawings; and sculptures. She is a founder of PrintMatters, PrintHouston, and the community steamroller event Rockin’ Rollin’ Prints. She helped start Burning Bones Press, a cooperative print studio in Houston, where she prints, conducts workshops, and mentors other artists. She is a long-time assistant to master printer Pat Masterson.
