What does it mean to grieve? Whether we are confronted by death, divorce, the end of a career, or the loss of faith in one's religion, the grieving process is necessary and different each time and for each person. Besides unbearable pain and confusion, these experiences are often accompanied by numinous dreams, visions, and synchronistic experiences that can inform us in our individuation process. We will compare these contemporary experiences with those found in the ancient myth of Inanna, tracing her underworld journey, as well as her husband Dumuzi's reluctant journey, as a model for understanding the grief process as initiation.
