Evolution and Archetype: The Path from Gene to Myth
Saturday, March 31
10 am - 4 pm (1.5 hour lunch break)
Discover and examine the striking contemporary evidence for Jung's understanding of the human psyche. Although Jung is often praised or, more often, scorned for being the guru of the New Age, it turns out that his theories developed a century ago were so cleverly crafted that they are now harmonious with recent discoveries in the fields of evolutionary biology, neuropsychology, animal studies, anthropology, and archaeology. We will see how individuation describes the human way of being built upon an archetypal foundation of primate social life and how a search for a myth to live by is revealed in the Ice Age caves that mark the evolutionary appearance of our own species.
HAMMAN PROFESSIONAL WELLNESS WORKSHOP
The Dream of Curing the Patient with Love, Alone
Friday, March 30
9 am - 1 pm
What role does love play in the therapeutic relationship? In a time when it is not politically correct to admit the interpersonal truth—that eros makes our work possible—therapists must learn how to manage the affection they necessarily feel for patients. Many in the first generation of analysts fell into a naïve dream that their patients needed only a strong dose of "the love they had longed for as children." Jones, Ferenczi, Jung, and company were not entirely wrong, but a century of reflection and self-critique has given us some principles to follow. In this workshop, we will explore the uses and misuses of love in the therapeutic context. |
