Was Jung Right? Empirical Facts, Necessary Fictions
Jerry Ruhl, PhD
Wednesdays, 5:45 - 7:15 pm
Sept 15 - Oct 27
(no class Sept 29 and Oct. 6)
$75 ($65 Jung Center members)
7.5 CE hours
Deepen your understanding of the psyche as we examine the remarkable convergence of evidence supporting many of Jung's ideas (and some instances where his theories are badly in need of revision). We will review independent research in affective and cognitive neuroscience, cultural anthropology, evolutionary psychology, psycholinguistics, and neurobiology. We will explore 'facts' as presented by research from the scientific method, as well as the 'fictions' of all research methods, and we will discuss the necessity of applying different research methods for 'inner' vs. 'outer' work. Topics will include the link between biology and symbol; the inadequacy of a 'blank slate' model of mind; evidence for a psychic system of a collective, universal and impersonal nature; as well as innate organizing principles of the human brain/mind.
Jerry M. Ruhl, PhD, is an author, psychologist, and executive director of The Jung Center. With Robert A. Johnson, he is the co-author of Living Your Unlived Life, Contentment, and Balancing Heaven and Earth.
