Sept 15 - Oct 27 (no class Sept 29)

Gain a deep appreciation of some of the most powerful music ever composed, Gustav Mahler's Symphonies 6-10. In these late works, Mahler forces us to confront the most important aspects of the human psyche: death, resurrection—but most of all, love. The continuing conflict between Mahler and his wife Alma will be explored, both through his music and through several films on the subject. This survey completes the study begun with his early works, but participation in the previous class is not necessary.
